Preview of the Rochester (High School) Mountain Bike Team's t-shirt

RMBT: Rochester Mountain Bike Team (High School)

I had the pleasure of designing a t-shirt for the local high school mountain bike team again for 2012. They will be competing in the Minnesota High School Mountain Bike League. This fall will be the first official season for the league, although many of the riders will be riding in the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series this summer, and did ride in last years MMBS/High School Pilot series.

If you haven't already go to and like the team's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RochesterMountainBikeTeam), as the more followers they have, the more appealing it is to potential sponsors to support the them.

Beer of the Week - Boatswain Chocolate Stout

Boatswain Chocolate Stout - Beer of the week Beer Review. Beer photos.
My wife picked up this pint bottle of Boatswain Chocolate Stout for me from Trader Joe's early this week. I kept it in the fridge for a couple days and cracked it open the other day while I needed to work on her bike a little.

It poured into the glass (I know, it's not a proper glass for a stout.) with an almost black color. Maybe it's my pouring technique, but I didn't (and don't usually) get much of a head on my pours. There was a little bit of foam lacing around the edge.

The smell was lightly of hops and malt and I couldn't detect much of a chocolate smell. On the first sip, I was expecting a thicker feel or texture and was surprised with how thin it was. The carbonation gives it a little extra feel. The flavor really good, once you get over that it's not a really strong chocolate flavor, as you might be expecting. There's were flavors of roasty malt and light hops. This is good as I think there's too much emphasis on hoppy beers. I't not that I don't like hoppy, but it seems like there are many beers, where just about all you taste is hops.

The chocolate in this beer is just a hint. If I didn't know it was brewed with cocoa powder in it, I probably couldn't tell there was a chocolate flavor to it. It was that subtle. Not that that's bad. If I wan't chocolate milk, I'd buy that.

The beer is a little sweet, but not in a sugary way. Just a nice sweetness to make this an easy drinking beer.

I realize this beer get's mixed reviews on BeerAdvocate, and an average rating giving it a score of "Average" but I wouldn't hesitate buying this again.

CMD+Shift+ALT+E (Photoshop Trick)

I don't use this key command enough to remember it (so I end up not using it), but CMD+Shift+ALT+E makes a copy of all the layers in a Photoshop file into a new merged layer.

If you're on Windows, it's CTRL+Shift+ALT+E.

Maybe now I can remember this Photoshop trick.

And just FYI here are a couple other Photoshop key commands.
  • CMD+J Duplicates the selected layer
  • CMD+E Merges the selected layers together or the selected layer with the one below it.

Finally had a decent competitive ride

I was able to (after missing a couple weeks) attend the Tuesday night at Eastwood, mountain bike ride/race/time trial/hotlap, or whatever you want to call it, last night. I've been riding more this year, but really haven't felt fast or strong. I ended up pulling the plug at the Sandwich 50 after 5 laps, and I've been getting dropped on the couple of roadie group rides I've been on.

But my hope is that at least my riding has been consistant. By that I mean I've been getting about 5 1/2 to 7 hours of riding in per week since the beginning of March.

I think my legs (and heart/lungs) are starting to come around. I was able to pull out a personal record last night at Eastwood, with a time of 34:56. And that's with having mandatory dismounts to hop over some fallen trees, cyclocross style. I'm sure the course being so dry and packed had a lot to do with the speed.

More important then speed, from a training standpoint, was that I was able to hold my pace at just under threshold for the full race (see the above SportTracks chart). In fact I was able to be over threshold for good part of the last 15 minutes. That's gotta make the heart and lungs stronger.

Now I hope I can just keep building on my form.

Minnesota ranked number 2 nationally as Bicycle Friendly State by the League of American Bicyclists

That's great news. Minnesota must be doing something right. Number 1 is Washington state. I'm surprised how low Hawaii is at number 41, but I guess they need some work. Visit this link (http://www.bikeleague.org/ programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/bicyclefriendlystate/#map) to see how other states ranked. It's a cool interactive/infographic map that allows you to click through to a .pdf of each state to see what they are doing right and what they can improve on.

Great job Minnesota! Click here to see the rest of the report card (http://www.bikeleague.org/ programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/bicyclefriendlystate/ bfs_report_cards/minnesota.pdf).

Here's one of the tips the League gives. I have to agree with it.
Bicycle ridership, while good, must continue to increase. Determine barriers that people face when bicycling and implement a comprehensive strategy to reduce barriers and increase ridership.
The biggest barrier in Rochester is visible infrastructure. As experiences as I am, I'm extremely nervous about getting my kids on the roads. I've already discouraged my youngest from riding to school because I don't know of a safe route.

Hollywood is making another cycling movie

There is a cycling video embedded in this post that you may not be able to view. Click through to the blog to watch it. Hello Justin Bieber fans.

Here's what looks to be another cheeseball movie about the sport we love. Peloton the Movie. I know it will be nowhere as good as Breaking Away, but I'm sure I'll be heading to the theater to see it.
The painful and humorous journey of a selfish athlete who is now down on his luck unable even to keep his job as a bike messenger. He finds a way to redeem his life through the support of friends and by learning that to break from the large group of bikers, the peloton, the winning cyclist must first work with the team.
I'm still waiting for the Major Taylor movie. (Come on Oprah, you gotta put your production company behind this).

Beer of the week - Odell's 90 Shilling

Odell's 90 Shilling beer review. Good stuff. Not overly hoppy, a little malty, and slightly sweet (but not overly so). It's a good after ride beer, or good for a warm afternoon while grilling up some steaks.

Beer Review: Odell's 90 Shilling. Beer photos.

I tried this beer last summer at a fundraiser beer tasting and it was one that really stood out for me. After drinking it again at the Craft Beer Expo, I felt I needed a little more then a sampling and picked up a sixer. It's been enjoyable.

Don't just take my word, BeerAdvocate gives good reviews and ratings on it too. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/267/740

Not sure if I'll be able to get a Beer of the week beer review everyweek, but I'll at least try to post when I have something that's worth mentioning. And possibly more homebrew postings too.

Surly - Black Flag | Surly is more punk/DIY then you!

I did a quick design of a beer coaster (or beer mat if you're in Great Briton) for a Surly Facebook contest. I attended the Rochester Craft Beer Expo last weekend, had a good time and sampled many beers. The Surly booth was one of the popular ones. They were pouring Furious, Bitter, Darkness, Coffee Bender and Five.

Photo by Shehab Jafari — at Rochester Craft Beer Expo.

After talking a little with the booth people and sampling their beer, I got the impression that they were a pretty punk company. Punk as in DIY, take it upon yourself to do what you think is best for you and flip your middle finger up to the establishment.

So when I saw that they were holding a little contest for Surly coasters that will be printed in the thousands and ten's of thousands and displayed (under drinking glasses) in bars and restaurants that serve Surly beer, I instantly thought of this concept.

Yeah, it's a direct rip-off of the Black Flag bars. But, they seem to fit with the culture and aesthetic of what Surly seems to be. In your face, anti-authoritarian and non-conformist. Exactly what the bars represent to me. Plus with the logo across the front, it gives an impression of a fist (the red bars being the four fingers and the logo being the thumb) about to punch you in the eye.

If you think it's worthy of being printed visit the Surly Brewing Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/surlybrewing), like it, then visit this link and vote for my design (https://apps.facebook.com/contestshq/contests/224429/voteable_entries/50890923). You can vote one time per day thru Tuesday, May 22. So go back everyday and vote again.

I know, it's pretty shameless, I'm okay with that. I even voted for myself.

Getting original size images from picassaweb

Got this from this blog:

Ever wanted to link to or embed a full size picture from picasa web? Here’s how:
Go to “link to this photo”, and copy the embed code to wherever you’re embedding/linking-to it. It doesn’t matter what size you pick, as you have to manually change it anyway. Get the code, which, depending on the options you chose, will look something like this:
http://lh6,ggpht,com/_i8tjQU6rloE/TCFKe3BxbyI/AAAAAAAAAVE/2-X9F-ls8WA/s800/Jack%20creek%20Panorama2.jpg

Then, replace the number marked in bold above with a zero. (my ex is 800, yours could also be: 144, 288 OR 400).

Now your link looks something like this:
http://lh6,ggpht,com/_i8tjQU6rloE/TCFKe3BxbyI/AAAAAAAAAVE/2-X9F-ls8WA/s0/Jack%20creek%20Panorama2.jpg

Done!

Your image will now load the same size as was originally uploaded :) Enjoy!

It is also possible to use other sizes rather then full size. All sizes up to 1600 work. The number represents the width of the image in pixels. 0 loads the originally uploaded size, even if that is bigger than 1600px.

Stolen Bike Alert

17.5" Trek Superfly 100 Pro

So some jerk couldn't keep their hands off something that doesn't belong to them. This time it's the bike of another Sandwich 50 race promoter. Apparently the thief broke into his car overnight and made off with his bike. One thing for any bike shops to watch for is someone wanting new thru axles, as those may not have been taken.

This has been around for a while, but I thought I'd post it just the same as I've been looking at infographics lately. I pulled this from http://dailyinfographic.com/bikes-can-save-us-infographic.

Sandwich 50 2012 - What I learned...

So last Saturday I rode the Sandwich 50 Enduro mountain bike race. There was concern about whether or not the race would go on because it was raining most of the Friday before, but it ended up stopping and started to dry out.

The race didn't really go how I wanted it to. The other day I read this article on Endurance Corner (link). It's not anything I didn't know, but it's a good reminder to use a bad performance as a learning experience.

Anyway, I had a plan to go hard and hit the singletrack in the top 10, keep a slightly hard pace for the first lap then back off for the next couple laps, and then try to ratchet it up at the end.

The race started and my preferred start position helped with my placement into the prologue lap and into the singletrack we went. But then I made the most basic rookie mistake. I overlapped wheels with the rider in front of me when we went into the first corner and I went down. In an instant, I went from a top 10 position to a top 20.

Next mistake was to try to ramp up my pace and try to make up some positions. I knew I was going too hard, but I must have had some extra adrenaline going cause I felt pretty strong.

I swapped bottles at the first lap pit stop, and threw down the arm-warmers I stripped off during the lap.

Next lap (lap2) was at about the same speed, with a tiny bit easier effort, but not as easy as I should have made it.

Second time through the Hobo Camp (bacon hand ups!). Image stolen from Drew. More in this album.

Next pit stop I made the mistake of riding through without grabbing a bottle, so I ended up trying to conserve the amount I was drinking  (lap3). I was still keeping about the same speed, and I think the effort was even a little less because the dirt was really tacking up. But even still I was averaging higher then 80% of max heart rate reserve.

I went in for the next pit stop and kinda knew I was in a bit over my head at this point. I grabbed something to eat, swapped bottles, stretched a little, and hopped back on my bike. I could tell my legs weren't really gonna give me the strength I wanted any more. But I figured  if I made it through this lap (lap4), I'd be more then halfway done.

I was able to complete this lap, but by the time I went back into the pits, my back started cramping. I stretched a bit more at the pit, ate, drank and headed back out. For this lap (lap5), my pace and effort became very low.

At this point I was suffering. My back was really cramping, my legs seemed to be barely turning over the pedals. Never the less, I finished the lap.

At this pit stop I contemplated pulling out, but I figured I'd just take this next lap (lap6) section by section. The first section was slow, going up the long straight, I was pleased to see the family drive by as they were going to the park to see me race a little.

The next section I was feeling ok, untill I hit the 3 climbs. I'm not sure what the actual name of this section of trail is, but I keep calling it the 3 b!tche5. And they were really b!tche5 this time. It was the first time I used the small granny ring out at Eastwood for a long time.

My back was really killing me at this point, I went through the next section crawling along, thinking about just getting through it.

When I came out, I decided I was done. I took the ski trail back to the start/finish/pit area, told the lap counters I was done, and coasted over to my family.

In this chart, split 1 is the prologue, then lap 1 through 6, then the ride to the start/finish/pit area.
In the end I completed 5 laps. I would have loved to have done better, but this is the longest I've ridden a mountain bike in one race. Next time I'll have a better idea of what I'm in for, and stick to my plan. I think if I would have backed off to the effort I was at during lap 4 starting with lap 2, I would have been able to finish the race.

So what did I learn? Don't overlap wheels. For an endurance race, stick with a plan, keep a pace. And swap your bottles.

Now to think about possibly doing Afton or Red Wing, and getting the Pork Chop started with the kids race.

The infographic below is taken from: National Poll - America Bikes

Some very interesting stats for sure. I didn't realize that only 1.5% of federal transportation funding goes to biking and walking. And even though there are differences based on demographics, all demographics are pretty close to each other.

The evolution of all that training data

So back in the day, ancient times, early 1980's, the only way to train was to just ride your bike. In fact to get better, all you had to do was to ride more. That was the training program - Ride More. And it worked, In fact it still works today. Especially for most of us. You wanna get better, stronger, faster? Then just ride more. Honestly, most of us have nothing to fear about overtraining.

Blog maintenance, removing labels/tags

I'm in the slow process of stripping this blog of labels/tags. Here's a Wikipedia article about tags (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_(metadata)). I never had a real plan as to how to use tags in my blog and it's ended up being too big a hassle to deal with. I have posts tagged bike and others bicycle, race or bike racing. Some posts had up to 10 tags, and others had one or 2. So I'm just gonna strip them all. Need to find something? Hopefully the search will be fairly accurate.

This report hit's me a little harder then other recent deaths of well known people, because... well, because I was a Beastie Boy myself.

No, I don't mean that I was in the band. I mean here was a group of guys that were into punk rock, rapping about partying, getting with chicks, ditching school and having fun. So it was what my friends and I were all about. The Beasties were us, and we were the Beasties.

The Giro starts on Saturday.

There is a video embedded in this post that you may not be able to view. Click through to the blog to watch it. Justin Bieber to race in the 2012 Giro d'Italia.

The first grand tour on the cycling calendar starts Saturday, May 5. This race looks to be pretty wide open. Could we see Basso in form to duke it out? Is Cav gonna take the sprints? Who's gonna take the mountain top finish of the Stelvio?

Wanna make keeping track of the Giro more fun. Join a fantasy cycling game. There's a bunch out there, but I like VeloFight. It's free. It's easy, you pick your team for the whole tour, instead of swapping riders for every stage. It allows you to play against a smaller group of people by using groups. If you're looking for a group to play with Join FAKAWOT! It's an open group.

Want to watch live streaming feeds of the race? Go to cyclingfans.com. They update the feeds for every stage.

Steephill.tv has a ton of information and coverage.

You can also visit the official Giro site: http://www.gazzetta.it/Speciali/Giroditalia/2012/en/index.shtml

It should boil down to an exciting race.
