How Bikes Can Save Us

This has been around for a while, but I thought I'd post it just the same as I've been looking at infographics lately. I pulled this from http://dailyinfographic.com/bikes-can-save-us-infographic.

As a side note, I figured that Picassa/Blogger has a size limit for height of images, so I cut this image up to display it at the size I want.

WTF! Who searches for DIY napalm infographic? Maybe you should look up happy kittens or something. Seriously, this isn't fight club.

Sandwich 50 2012 - What I learned...

So last Saturday I rode the Sandwich 50 Enduro mountain bike race. There was concern about whether or not the race would go on because it was raining most of the Friday before, but it ended up stopping and started to dry out.

The race didn't really go how I wanted it to. The other day I read this article on Endurance Corner (link). It's not anything I didn't know, but it's a good reminder to use a bad performance as a learning experience.

Anyway, I had a plan to go hard and hit the singletrack in the top 10, keep a slightly hard pace for the first lap then back off for the next couple laps, and then try to ratchet it up at the end.

The race started and my preferred start position helped with my placement into the prologue lap and into the singletrack we went. But then I made the most basic rookie mistake. I overlapped wheels with the rider in front of me when we went into the first corner and I went down. In an instant, I went from a top 10 position to a top 20.

Next mistake was to try to ramp up my pace and try to make up some positions. I knew I was going too hard, but I must have had some extra adrenaline going cause I felt pretty strong.

I swapped bottles at the first lap pit stop, and threw down the arm-warmers I stripped off during the lap.

Next lap (lap2) was at about the same speed, with a tiny bit easier effort, but not as easy as I should have made it.

Second time through the Hobo Camp (bacon hand ups!). Image stolen from Drew. More in this album.

Next pit stop I made the mistake of riding through without grabbing a bottle, so I ended up trying to conserve the amount I was drinking  (lap3). I was still keeping about the same speed, and I think the effort was even a little less because the dirt was really tacking up. But even still I was averaging higher then 80% of max heart rate reserve.

I went in for the next pit stop and kinda knew I was in a bit over my head at this point. I grabbed something to eat, swapped bottles, stretched a little, and hopped back on my bike. I could tell my legs weren't really gonna give me the strength I wanted any more. But I figured  if I made it through this lap (lap4), I'd be more then halfway done.

I was able to complete this lap, but by the time I went back into the pits, my back started cramping. I stretched a bit more at the pit, ate, drank and headed back out. For this lap (lap5), my pace and effort became very low.

At this point I was suffering. My back was really cramping, my legs seemed to be barely turning over the pedals. Never the less, I finished the lap.

At this pit stop I contemplated pulling out, but I figured I'd just take this next lap (lap6) section by section. The first section was slow, going up the long straight, I was pleased to see the family drive by as they were going to the park to see me race a little.

The next section I was feeling ok, untill I hit the 3 climbs. I'm not sure what the actual name of this section of trail is, but I keep calling it the 3 b!tche5. And they were really b!tche5 this time. It was the first time I used the small granny ring out at Eastwood for a long time.

My back was really killing me at this point, I went through the next section crawling along, thinking about just getting through it.

When I came out, I decided I was done. I took the ski trail back to the start/finish/pit area, told the lap counters I was done, and coasted over to my family.

In this chart, split 1 is the prologue, then lap 1 through 6, then the ride to the start/finish/pit area.
In the end I completed 5 laps. I would have loved to have done better, but this is the longest I've ridden a mountain bike in one race. Next time I'll have a better idea of what I'm in for, and stick to my plan. I think if I would have backed off to the effort I was at during lap 4 starting with lap 2, I would have been able to finish the race.

So what did I learn? Don't overlap wheels. For an endurance race, stick with a plan, keep a pace. And swap your bottles.

Now to think about possibly doing Afton or Red Wing, and getting the Pork Chop started with the kids race.

Majority of 'mer-cans support increasing funding for sidewalks and bike lanes/routes

The infographic below is taken from: National Poll - America Bikes

Some very interesting stats for sure. I didn't realize that only 1.5% of federal transportation funding goes to biking and walking. And even though there are differences based on demographics, all demographics are pretty close to each other.

The evolution of all that training data

So back in the day, ancient times, early 1980's, the only way to train was to just ride your bike. In fact to get better, all you had to do was to ride more. That was the training program - Ride More. And it worked, In fact it still works today. Especially for most of us. You wanna get better, stronger, faster? Then just ride more. Honestly, most of us have nothing to fear about overtraining.

Blog maintenance, removing labels/tags

I'm in the slow process of stripping this blog of labels/tags. Here's a Wikipedia article about tags (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_(metadata)). I never had a real plan as to how to use tags in my blog and it's ended up being too big a hassle to deal with. I have posts tagged bike and others bicycle, race or bike racing. Some posts had up to 10 tags, and others had one or 2. So I'm just gonna strip them all. Need to find something? Hopefully the search will be fairly accurate.

R.I.P. MCA (Adam Yauch | 1964-2012)

There is a video embedded in this post that you may not be able to view. Click through to the blog to watch it. Beastie Boys.

It's a sad day. Adam Yaunch (AKA: MCA or Nathanial Hörnblowér) passed away after years of fighting cancer. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/beastie-boys-co-founder-adam-yauch-dead-at-48-20120504

This report hit's me a little harder then other recent deaths of well known people, because... well, because I was a Beastie Boy myself.

No, I don't mean that I was in the band. I mean here was a group of guys that were into punk rock, rapping about partying, getting with chicks, ditching school and having fun. So it was what my friends and I were all about. The Beasties were us, and we were the Beasties.

VeloFight for the Giro d'Italia 2012

Get your team set up before midnight Friday to be able to play as they lock the selections Saturday 5/5/2012 at 12:01am.

One tip I'll give you is to add additional riders to your lineup. They will be grayedout (inactive) and not count for anything. BUT if one of your active selections get's scratched, the top inactive rider will move up into the active area. WALLA! replacement rider! Pretty sweet, huh?

The Giro starts on Saturday.

There is a video embedded in this post that you may not be able to view. Click through to the blog to watch it. Justin Bieber to race in the 2012 Giro d'Italia.

The first grand tour on the cycling calendar starts Saturday, May 5. This race looks to be pretty wide open. Could we see Basso in form to duke it out? Is Cav gonna take the sprints? Who's gonna take the mountain top finish of the Stelvio?

Wanna make keeping track of the Giro more fun. Join a fantasy cycling game. There's a bunch out there, but I like VeloFight. It's free. It's easy, you pick your team for the whole tour, instead of swapping riders for every stage. It allows you to play against a smaller group of people by using groups. If you're looking for a group to play with Join FAKAWOT! It's an open group.

Want to watch live streaming feeds of the race? Go to cyclingfans.com. They update the feeds for every stage.

Steephill.tv has a ton of information and coverage.

You can also visit the official Giro site: http://www.gazzetta.it/Speciali/Giroditalia/2012/en/index.shtml

It should boil down to an exciting race.

Wheel Bearings

This is just so I don't forget. Shimano rear hubs take 1/4 in loose balls, 9 per side for 18 total. Shimano fronts are 3/16, 11 per side for 22 total. I'll have to look and see what size bearings and if they are cartridge or loose ball. I know everyone is all hepped up about ceramic bearings right now, but holy cow, they are pricy. For $20 I can do one side of a hub with ceramic (10 balls) or I can get enough grade 25 steel bearings to replace both sides for 5 times (100 balls).

I sometimes suffer a little bike lust...

One of the designers of Cervelo bikes (Gerard Vroomen) with Andy Kessler designed a pretty hot looking 29er hardtail (Open Cycles O-1.0). Now I've got a case of bike lust. I mean the bike looks extremely well thought out, as well as being light (850 grams for a large frame). Bike Rumor has a built up bike weighing in at 19.5 lbs, without pedals. Below are some photos to drool over, taken from the Open Cycles website. Visit the site for videos of Gerard discussing highlights of the frame design. http://www.opencycle.com/

In this shot you can see how thin the seatstays are.
Seatstays up close.

One thing to note on sizing is that they use reach and stack instead of top tube and seat tube measurements. Minor, I think I'd still take a large. That is if I actually had the extra $3400 to buy one of these bad boys.

Seat Binder (seat post clamp) pops off the Paragon

2011 Trek Paragon Hello mountain bike racing fans.
So I've had this happen a couple times and am wondering if it's an issue I should bring up with the dealer. Somehow as I'm riding, the seat post binder will pop off the seat tube as I'm riding. I noticed it's on really rough sections of trail. I'll notice that the seat is loose, pull off the side of the trail and the clamp is off.

I question if the binder design or the 3 slit seat tube top is to blame. I use a torque wrench and wrench it to the specced 46 in*lbs and check it about every 2 to 3 (maybe 4) weeks. The seat post is greased, as is the binder. It's happened 3x in the past year I've owned the bike (under 100 hrs of riding time), so it's not often, but enough times that I'm concerned it could happen in a competitive situation.

Seat clamp is 31.8.
