Dear Santa

I know it's been almost a year since I last wrote you, I'm sorry. I've been a pretty good boy this year. Well, maybe almost mostly good.

Anyway I was hoping you had some room in your sleigh for an S-Works Epic 29er. http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/first-ride-specialized-s-works-epic I promise I wont ask for anything else. And I will be extra good next year.

I'll make an extra batch of cookies and leave some carrots for the reindeer. Would you rather have eggnog or milk with it?

Your favorite boy,
Gunnar

ps. some of my friends tried to tell me you aren't real. I refused to believe them and punched them in the back of the head for you.

Warrior Dash?

So I think I heard about this a couple years ago, but I don't think they had one in Minnesota at the time. Well guess what? Minnesota is listed for July. It's the Warriors Dash. http://www.warriordash.com/

Even though I'm no runner, I think I'd like to try to do this race. 3 miles, but they throw in a bunch of crazy obstacles, like sliding down a steep muddy hill, rappelling a ravine, climbing up and over huge haystacks and leaping over fire. Doesn't this sound like fun? I think it sure does.

Registration is $40 before the end of the year, then it goes up to $50, $60 and $65 depending on how close to the event you're registering.

I think there is some truth in this video. No excuses, wear your helmet. Then you may be invited to race the Tour day France.

2011 Almanzo 100 / Royal 162

In case 100 miles of gravel road racing wasn't enough for you, the Mayor (Chris Skogen) is adding a 162 mile course in addition to the 100 miler.
This year, for the first time ever, we are offering two simultaneous events. The original Almanzo 100 and the Royal 162. What is the difference? We're happy to explain.

First, the Almanzo 100:
100 miles of rolling gravel roads through Southeastern Minnesota.
No outside support.
12 hour window to finish.

Second, the Royal 162:
162 miles of rolling gravel roads through Southeastern Minnesota.
No outside support.
15 hour window to finish.

This is pretty interesting. Not sure if I could add another 3+ hours of riding on gravel myself, but I'm sure there are those of you out there looking for this type of challenge. Then again, it's not that I wouldn't want to do it. It could be a great way to really expand on the suffering that I already know of cycling.

hmmmmm......

Choices, choices, choices.

Maybe I need to start on an EPO program

No, not really! In fact I think it's pretty sad that doping is in the amateur and especially masters races. I mean I understand it for the under 30 guys. The guys who dream of making a living by racing their bike. They need results to progress up the ladder. I'm not saying it's right, but I understand it.

But then you reach an age, and realize you can't cat up any higher and you're racing to finish mid pack. You'll never become a pro. What's the point in cheating? Glory? Beat the local yokels? Where's the pride in that if it's not fair? I mean everyone wants to win, but we're talking about a hobby, a game, something that is done for fun. I don't think it's gonna make or break your career if you can place a couple spots higher in a local crit.

I think any athlete (or any human) can understand that there are always obstacles in the way of our personal goals and victories. And while it's ultimately up to ourselves to overcome them, it can be much easier when you have someone with you to help.

In case you haven't seen it yet

The Minnesota state Cyclocross championships made national news because of the "epic" conditions. Check out the news clip:

Of course I didn't show up. I think every year, I say I'm gonna show up and at least watch with the kids. So once again... maybe next year.

Gunnar Soroos rides for Toms Shoes Cycling Team. Gunnar Soroos is so crazy and awesome that he flips out ALL the time. I heard that Gunnar was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon Gunnar Soroos killed the whole town. My friend Oprah Winfrey said that she saw Gunnar Soroos totally uppercut some jerkface just because they opened a window. Gunnar Soroos doesn't shop at Costco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gunnar Soroos has two speeds. Fast, and Kill! The main export of a Gunnar Soroos attack is pain. You can control how people can interact with you and your friends. Choose who can see you, who can speak to you, who can hurt you, and who can be ignored.
